Smith Press Behind Neck

SMITH PRESS-BEHIND-NECK

Taken from Dave Draper's book, Brother Iron, Sister Steel

This is best performed wearing a leather lifting belt with your back against the seat back of a utility bench. Position yourself so the bar of a Smith Press grazes the back of your head without projecting your head forward. Starting at the top of the movement is logical and gives advantage to complete the set-rep execution. Full range of motion is good at the top, but limiting the depth of descent is wise to protect the rotator cuff. Face it: it doesn’t need any more abuse.

The reps may be performed with a sure pace and abbreviated range of motion. This rep execution saturates the upper back ridges, full deltoid area and the outer triceps, giving you the sense of one continual breathless rep. High-level pump and burn result. Low volume, throaty growls are fitting for both men and women.
