Alaska Bash 2006

~~Yo! The photos and reports thread~~

Corey Pavitt invited us to Alaska for an Iron Online Bash last week, the weekend of June 17, 2006, in Juneau, Alaska.

I'm pretty fascinated by the notion of 18 hours of daily sunshine. Here's more to get you daydreaming.

 About Juneau

 TravelJuneau.com

Per Corey:

Geographically, Juneau is divided in two main areas. The "Downtown" is about 9 miles from the airport and nestled between the mountains and Gastineau Channel. This is where all the tour ships come in and where the Capital Building as well as a lot of other historic buildings are. The "Valley" extends from the airport to Auke Bay to the Mendenhall Glacier. The Valley has a commercial center but is largely residental.

The Frontier Suites is located close to the airport at 9400 Glacier Hwy. They are giving us a group rate of $99/night and will hold the rooms until May 15th. Rooms are under Pavitt/Iron On Line, (907) 790-6600.

Frontier Suites is a newer hotel and quite nice. $99 during the summer is a really good rate. It is within walking distance of the airport but they do have a free shuttle. More importantly, it is within walking distance of Pavitt Health & Fitness Center at 10004 Glacier Hwy.

Downtown, we recommend the Driftwood Lodge at 435 Willoughby Ave. (907) 586-2280. They didn't give us a group rate, but their price is pretty reasonable at $89/night. It is not as new as the Frontier Suites, but it is in good shape and family owned. I would stay there if I wanted to be downtown.

Those who are staying in Juneau for several days before or after the Bash might enjoy being downtown for part of their stay and at "Bash Central" out in the Valley for the weekend.

There are a number of fancier and more expensive hotels downtown if anyone wants to go more upscale. The Baranof, (800) 544-0970, is probably the nicest. The Prospector, (907) 586-3737, and the Goldbelt, (888) 478-6909, are both good but more expensive.
