Wicked like to read your stuff.

Except when you use big words.

Very entertaining...I could just "see" everything as you described it.
"I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in."

no man comes to the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Thanks, guys. Encouraging words are always appreciated.

WHAT big words, Wicked? Bigfoot sent me a PM and said he understood this one just fine...

You used a whole bunch of words that were more than four letters...around these here parts, that's not allowed before noon. (wink)

Plantar Fascia Exercises
10-18-05 12:46 PM - Post#127781

Anybody ever done these? Do they help? Nothing like freaking out your spouse when he catches you sitting around picking up marbles with your toes.

This is from WebMD:

Exercises to do each day

Stretching and strengthening exercises will help reduce plantar fasciitis.

Stretching exercises should create a pulling feeling—they should not cause pain. Stretching exercises include:
Plantar fascia stretches.

Use a rolling pin or tennis ball. While seated, roll the rolling pin or ball with the arch of your foot. Progress to doing this exercise while standing as you can tolerate it.

Use a towel (towel stretch). Place the rolled towel under the center of your foot, holding the towel at both ends, and gently pull the towel toward you, keeping your knee straight, until you feel a stretch either in your calf or the bottom of your foot. Hold this position for at least 20 seconds.

Calf stretches. To stretch the Achilles tendon, lean forward against a wall, keep one leg with the knee straight and heel on the ground while bending the knee in the other leg. Hold this position for 20 seconds, then switch legs. Try to do this stretch 3 to 6 times a day.

Combination plantar fascia/calf stretch. Stand on a step with the front part of your feet, keeping your heels free. While holding onto the rail, slowly lower your heels. Hold this stretch for 20 seconds, then bring your heels back to a level position. Repeat this stretch 10 times.

Strengthening exercises include:

Towel curls. While sitting, place your foot on a towel on the floor and scrunch the towel toward you with your toes. This exercise is best done on a smooth surface, such as a linoleum or hardwood floor, so the towel slides easily. After you pull the towel toward you, push it away again with your toes. This helps to give the different muscles in your foot a balanced workout. As your foot gets stronger, place a soup can or other weighted object on the far end of the towel.

Marble pickups. Put marbles on the floor next to a cup. Using your toes, try to lift the marbles up from the floor and put them in the cup.

I have done all the stretches. The last two in particular either prevented PF from reappearing or caused it. Not sure which.

I am painfree right now and not going to do anything that is PF specific until I talk to my MD later this week. I am thinking of trying custom Superfeet - supposed to be more effective in controlling pronation than the over the counter ones. Also trying to touch-type with the toes. The shift key is tricky.

Good Bombers vs. Bad Bombers
10-19-05 12:21 AM - Post#127783

So today at 4:20pm in front of an audience of cell phone users, I executed:

- Clean & Press
- Military Press
- Incline Bench
- Barbell Rows

I started feeling really weak about 3:30 so I had a snack, but I was still really dragging through the workout. Not exactly sure why, but I have this new (annoying to other family members) habit of doing five or ten minutes of twists every night in front of the tv. It's just standing and twisting rather vigorously. I'm feeling a lot of muscle fatigue in my back and midsection from it, and it could be that the recovery from that is lagging me down. It almost feels like an electrolyte imbalance, so I'm trying to drink a lot of water.

Since I have had some abdominal pain that seemed to signal I needed to lay off from heavy ab work (I may have a hernia) my second form of attack on the midsection is twists. They have worked very well for me in the past.

I'm going through a phase of real peaks and valleys where some days I'm as strong as an ox and other days I can't throw around nearly as much weight as I have at other times. Laree said it would be like this.

I'm eating really clean, perhaps too clean as in sometimes not enough. I have to remind myself to keep throwing fuel on the fire.

Went to the supermarket after the gym. I hate going to this particular Pavilions, but Natalie wanted Panda Express kung pao chicken really bad, and they have it there. There is always some kind of chaos going on in the parking lot at this store. Homeless people park themselves right where you have to reach and take a ticket for parking, and you always feel like they are going to come up and grab you. Then, at the far end of the parking lot, there is usually some kind of drama going on, involving people in getting in and out of cars and talking to other people in cars. I hate it.

So today I'm coming out of the store and I see this older middle eastern woman, all dressed in black with a scarf around her head. She was walking around the parking lot mumbling to herself, clearly demonstrating that she was distressed in some way. I saw her stand at the end of a row of cars and put her hand out to her side, straight out in to the air and just freeze there. I thought, oh my God, she's going to blow herself up and the detonator is in her hand.

I darted in the opposite direction towards my car. But nothing happened. Then suddenly she turns and comes up to me, and says, "Can you help me, my car has no gas." This is a common hit for money in that particular parking lot. I've been hit up like this before in this parking lot at least twice. I give her my stock answer, "I'm sorry, I have no cash." She looks disappointed. I said to her, "Go into the store and speak to the manager. He can help you." And with that she walked off.

She didn't go towards the store, but instead headed towards some nice young middle eastern looking gent getting out of his car. He looked perpelexed that a woman like herself would be in such a dilemma, just as I was. She had no purse, and the location of her alleged car was unclear. Definitely a scam.

But it wasn't until I saw her go up to the other guy that I felt certain she wasn't going to blow herself up. Why do I have this fear? Because citizens of LA were told not long ago that this sort of thing could happen. We've been warned that any one of the homeless people I see every day with the layers of jackets they wear could be a suicide bomber. My paranoia ran amok for a moment.

What a way to live, huh? I go for kung pao and worry I've come face to face with a real Ka Pow.

One place you won't find a suicide bomber is at the gym. You can't pump iron with explosives strapped to your chest and a heavy jacket on. With that said, the gym seems like the best possible place for us to spend as much time as we can. You may find Bombers there, but they're the good kind, with a capital B. :)

A gym is a great place to be! I've found a home in the squat rack. :o)

I can go to the gym without any worries for my personal safety from the other members. However, I do have to protect myself from all the "bad advices" given by the gym "experts." Even with these "bad advices," some of the gym rats are still Bombers at heart. It's just their mainstream beliefs that are distorted.

What a frightening world we live in.

There has been speculation on the news at Al Qaeda (spelling variable and optional) has figured out that it is sufficient to make a credible threat, rather than carrying out an actual attack, to create chaos. The Baltimore area today (10/18/05) was an example.

If 99% of managers could grasp that 99% of all communication among their white-collar employees is via e-mail, and that any meeting that can be conducted face-to-face can also be conducted via software like NetMeeting, this problem would vanish to a large extent.

We're still organized along the lines of, "If they throw a punch at you, lean into it."

I agree with you that a gym is one of the safest places in the world...<evil grin>
I am not suffering from insanity. I am enjoying every minute of it.

Only thing I did not like about Santa Monica was the bums. Lots of them on the beach [couldn't walk there at night] and 3rd Street Promenade and most every where else with their hand out. They were in packs and made Christine very uncomfortable when I wasn't with her. When I was with her they generally left us alone as I definitely don't appear to be an easy touch and I'm not polite to them if they approach me. Don't know why you Californians put up with them ?

Thursday All Day
10-20-05 04:09 PM - Post#127789

Now that I have backed off my shopping-list, kiss-me-kill-me, pump-till-you puke workouts of several months ago, my mode in the gym is altogether different. And strangely enough, I'm getting just as sore.

Today:
- Good Mornings - 3 sets of ten @ 65lbs
- SLDLS - 3 sets ten @ 85lbs
- Flat Bench DB Press - 3 sets of ten with 2 25lb DBs
- Rotary Calf Machine - 3 sets of 20 @ 210 (foot did not get mad)

I'm in the zone with every rep. Each one means the world to me. I wanted to do more, but I refrained from doing so in light of what I've learned from others here.

They were playing some nice downbeat/ambient music today, which always helps me focus and feel calm. This makes up nicely for the brain-bleed-inducing BTO yesterday which gave me Bally's flashbacks. No wonder they blast that stuff to break Gitmo detainees. Even THEY'VE heard it on the radio nonstop for thirty years. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I'm now 118lbs. This is the leanest I've been in a couple of years. A strange thing happens when my bodyfat gets lower - my appetite disappears. Why can't that happen when I'm piggy and fat? What's up with that? Does anyone else have that happen and understand what that is about? I'm having to make myself eat more, because I'm getting woozy.

My target weight is 115. The bulking phase I did last year was very beneficial in that it helped me break through a strength plateau. However, the cost was eternal bulkitude. I'm keeping the strength I gained, but losing the fat - especially lower abdominal fat that takes SO long to get off (though it is fading) - has been slow going when trying to maintain muscle at the same time.

Life in general is starting to mirror my workouts. A bit slower, more deliberate, more organized and lots more thoughtful. I feel a lot better. My mind is much more open to myriad possibilities that live in each moment. I see and notice more than I used to. I hear and smell things that I didn't notice before. (Which is, unfortunately, sometimes unpleasant.)

In general, bad carbs are addictive. When you're overweight it generally is a result of overeating bad carbs.

You've seen people eat a whole pizza, or a whole box of donuts, or a whole bag of cookies, or a whole box of Frosted Flakes, or a whole bag of Doritos. They can't stop.

Now .. have you ever seen someone eat a whole bag of apples, a whole bushel of broccoli, a whole watermelon, a dozen ears of corn? ;)

The body uses the hormone insulin to convert sugar, starch and other foods into energy. We know that eating carbohydrate raises insulin, which then lowers blood sugar. This causes a desire (or craving) for more food and, in most people, carbohydrates -- usually the bad ones which spike the insulin response the highest.

Not arguing your point, but, yes, actually, I have seen all those things. Done one or two of them myself. I hear second hand that some diet/eating disorder support groups place limits on all food consumed except water - to include lettuce, for folks that will do to veggies as they would do to pizza.

My local HMO program, again second hand, did not do that - they allowed unlimited raw or steamed veggies. Everything else had a lid.

Is your fat intake still high ? When I was on a diet of about 60% carbs, 30% protein and 10% or less fats and reduced my calories about 20% to cut I would be starving about 1.5 hours after eating and was eating 6-7 meals per day. I lacked energy too. When I switched to high protein-fats/low carb the hunger disappeared had tons of energy and only needed 3-4 meals per day. As your weight decreases you don't require as much fuel as before either.

Texas watermelon is absolutely out of this world. I am a watermelon freak, hands down, and there is none finer. When I was a kid, I used to make a necklace out of the seeds of every one I ate - to remember it by. You know how the seeds are black and white striped? They make for a killer, African-looking necklace. I even added beads to some of them. Of course, that was before I learned to like the seeds...

Nowadays, that kind of really good watermelon is hard to find. But sometimes I can find it, if I find it cut already so I know how ripe it is, and then I usally eat the whole thing. Can't help it.

I Fondled Somebody's Poods Today
10-21-05 04:35 PM - Post#127800

Our transient friend from New Orleans is here staying with us, and made Jambalaya for dinner night. That woke up my appetite. I feel a whole lot better. I've got a bit more fuel in the furnace.

Since everything else is sore, I did:

- Close grip bench, 3 sets of 10 @ 65
- Hammer Curls, 3 sets of 10 @ 15
- Skullcrushers, 3 sets of 10 @ 35 with special trick at the end where you push the bar straight back over the top of your head at the end of the set a few times (this really gives you a burn)
- Tricep Pushdown, 2 sets of 12 @110, 1 set of 15 @120

Also I did my pushdowns with a V-Bar. First time. I saw somebody do it on tv and they said that it added more mass than the straight bar handle. I'm liking it so far.

And WHAT did I see gracing the floor of the gym not far from the db rack but a couple of 6kg kettlebell poods!!!

They belong to a trainer, but as they were unattended and looking lonesome I stole over and picked them up and played with them a bit. Poods! I'm going to Busybody today to see how much they are there. They're so cute, it's tempting to put them on top of the stove for decoration. Maybe I'll paint happy faces on mine when I get them.

I saw some other guy pick them up as well. Don't know if he was the rightful owner of the poods or not. If you're going to leave your poods lying around, you've gotta expect people to come up and handle them. They're unusual, they're charismatic, and those handles are just too tempting.

K

Someone's poods. I don't know whose they were. In public. After someone else did. Because they were so cute. But I do think that it is the kind of thing that should be done in the privacy of your own home because once they see them everyone will want them. That's what Vicki does. Ooops. Sorry Vicki.

I'm surprised you haven't been clued in yet. Those would have been kettlebells, alright, but as much as you want to use the word p p p pood, it don't fit. A pood is a Russian measurement of weight: close but not exactly 36 US pounds.

I've trashed your innocence so many times on this forum, Willie, I can't believe you even remember you once had it.

Anyway, bells, poods, or homely teapots that won't take water - I can't find any in my immediate area.

I don't like to pay full price for things, and I am horrified at the thought of paying for shipping for - uh, weights. I suppose I could get two cheap tea kettles at Ross and fill them with cat sand...but that would not be very satisfying. Could not get the proper swing on such a thing, and it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

I ordered mine from this place, Karen:

Not sure how far Vallejo is from you, but you might be able to save shipping costs if they're close by.

They were the "cheapest" I could find when searching for my kettlebells. They're chinese-made cast-iron 'bells, reasonably priced shipping too.

I have added a daily dose of twists to my workouts. These are done in front of the tv, and I twist just using my own body weight for a few sets of a couple of minutes each. I put my arms up with each twist and line up my elbows to the front center of my body. As I twist, I raise or lower my arms to get a good burn all the way down the core of my ab wall.

I started doing this after seeing an old video of a Tony-award dance number from West Side Story. These dancers were some of the fittest people I'd ever seen in my life - the power and grace they demonstrated was beyond description. I noticed they did a lot of torso twisting, so I decided to follow suit in my own odd little way.

I can't tell you how deeply my body is in recovery mode after doing these twists for four days last week. Yesterday I was logged down in heavy recovery, and I am also beat today. Everything else I worked during the week is lagged down in recovery. I found this amazing. I had no idea that my core was so weak - even with deadlifts, bent over barbell rows, db rows and all the other heavy stuff I do.

We're not just talking about the six pack area - I really feel it in my mid and lower back in all the little muscles that go from my spine to my side, and I feel it all over my ab wall. We're talking about core stabilizers that don't get hit when I deadlift, row, squat or do Good Mornings. This is the stuff that dancers work constantly, but I usually don't.

I have not done my former sets of hanging leg raises for a couple of months because I felt a lot of pain in my abdomen. Last month, my doctor told me she thinks I have an umbilical hernia. But, she added, I don't need to do anything about it. Because I did have some pain, I laid off the ab work until things sorted themselves out. It's better, but I'm proceeding slowly.

Today I saw an episode of "Insider Training" on FitTv. It featured the strength-building and rehabilitative workouts of three hockey players - Mario Lemieux, who has been out of the mix for awhile and wants to return to the NHL; a female hockey player who has won an Olympic gold medal for US women's hockey; and Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings, who also happens to be one of my favorite players of all time.

The two NHL players both had the same trainer who operates out of Gold's Gym in Venice. The female player lives up in Canada, and she has had some back problems due to an old injury.

Here's the circuit training workout they showed Chelios doing:
- Jump rope, 20-50 revolutions
- DB single leg squats (15 lb DB)
- DB lat raises
- Jump rope, 20-50 revolutions
- A lunge position for DB rows (fascinating and demanding move!)
- Close grip bench press (Cheli was using a EZ curl bar and two 25-lb plates)

Chelios' form and concentration were as great as his game.

Mario Lemieux has had three hip surgeries and back surgery, and the trainer had him doing hip/leg circles that strengthen the hip abductors. He was nowhere near the shape Chelios was in, and he is at least four years younger.

The female player has had a lot of help for lower back pain with acupuncture and electrical stimilation. Years ago, she sustained a small fracture in her spine when she recieved a particularly heaving hit with a stick during a game. Her trainer prescribed a heavy duty core workout using a ball. She went on in great detail about how this enhanced core work was fundamental, and how the lack of it in the past made her a weaker player than she should have been. She said without the proper foundation of a strong core, you were not going to have prolonged success building strength in any area. That made incredible sense to me.

So here I am, watching all this, with my butt kicked from having added some simple twists to my workout, my core workouts having been depleted because of an umbilical hernia. Chelios also said that his weak core had caused him many abdominal injuries in the past.

Oh. A spark of recognition went off in my dim blonde head.

Needless to say, I'm getting A Ball and am going to start focusing on The Core. It stands to reason that this is going to help my strength in all areas because a stronger core will enable me to lift more weight without injury. We're talking fundamentals, basics here, and about going back and doing the math.

One of my good friends, Steve Steifel, happens to have written a book about core training using a ball, called "The Ball Book". He is listed in my cell phone as "Mr. Smartypants". I am going to ask Mr. Smartypants do give me the down and dirty on core training. I will report in on the results.

In the meantime today, I am going to take a nap. The muscles in my back still feel noodly and I am extremely fatigued even after a full 8 hours sleep.

So what I will do is go to a three day full body workout that is fairly basic and modest, and focus on a ball workout at home every other day out of the week, taking a day off here and there as needed. I have a feeling that this will be an interesting experience.

It's been cooler lately as fall is apt to be, and for the first time in years I am actually getting cold both during the day and at night. This makes me think that my bodyfat level must be lower than it has been in several years. I don't know when I've been so cold...but pleased, too.

1. Damn, you can write.

2. There's a lot of energy in this post. Very inspiring.

3. My favourite core movements are overhead squats, barbell lunges, and (recently) heavy front squats. I have nothing against swiss balls, but... well, I'm a sucker for squat movements.

Thanks! For years I swore off exercise balls, but now I get what they are all about. I thought they were for wimps, but now I know they can make me mightier.

And squats rule. They absolutely rule.

KO, Thanks for your insight.

At the gym, I observed a member who was married to his stability ball and I thought he was a little "touched." Let us just say he went overboard with his attachment to the thing. I asked him if he was an athlete participating in specialized training (not the Special Olympics) and he replied, "No, I am a lawyer." I thought to myself, "Well, that explains it." LOL!

Can't wait to hear about your ball experiences.

The lawyer, with the stability ball joined at his hip, was extremely lean and muscular so there must be something to this stability ball attraction after all. He did advise me to get rid of my chairs and instead sit on a stabiity ball as he does when at work.

Having each workout different, using a variety of training methods all with a purpose, seems to be the way to go to work all the different types of training we need. It also keeps the workouts interesting.

Kettlebells seem to work best for hamstrings and hip area along with core tightening for me. I still have sore hamstrings from my KB seminar Saturday. This tends to confirm all the "noise" I have heard about how much women love the KBs for their good effect on these areas.

This is red-hot info, Vicki. I'd like to hear more about how you do this. It sounds like fun and makes a whole lot of sense.

Also, Mr. Smartypants does a lot of this sort of thing, and he's one of the fittest people I know. (He's like the male version of Vicki.)

You've sure got that right ! As your % of body fat lowers you have less insulation than before and will definitely feel colder than ever before as the weather changes and temps drop. Just be thankfull you're living in LA and not Central Illinois ! Oh how I miss summer !!

The last time I wore a sweatshirt to the gym was not long after I had Natalie, eleven years ago.

I wore one today. It came off after the second set of squats to reveal a t-shirt (it was Hello Kitty today).

Needing to remove the sweatshirt was a relief, because had I been able to keep it on throughout all nine sets of squats, no doubt I could have been declared clinically dead. Something would have been seriously wrong with me. It was nice to actually get all heated up. Lean is good, but it's freakin' cold.

So today, before an audience of thousands of dust mites, all on their cell phones, I did the following with a brief interlude for a costume change:
- Single leg squats, 3 sets of 10 @50 lbs
- Sumo squats, 3 sets of 10 @50 lbs
- Full squats, 3 sets of 10 @85 lbs
- Rotary calf, 3 sets of 15 @230 lbs

I ended up doing a lot of stretching. Hams and lower back demanded it.

Later tonight I'll do some twisties. Work today prevented me from going out and getting a ball.

As I left the gym, I caught my reflection in the windows - this 40-something woman walking down the street after nine sets of squats. I'm still really sore from last week and it was hard work - there's no denying that it's uncomfortable and unglamorous. I leave the gym looking disheveled and rough. I speak to no one while I'm there, a lone wolf by nature. Seeing this image in the glass I thought, "Aren't I odd. Why am I so driven to do this?"

Absolutely no particular reason came to mind.

I can't imagine doing anything else. Neither can the wheel of the locomotive, or the rock in the avalanche. The alternative is beyond imagination.

KO, for me reason has very little to do with the whole thing. No your not odd, the potatoes on the couch are the odd ones. Nice workout.

Thanks, guys.

Regarding triceps - before tendonitis flared up, I was doing up to 150lbs at times. Now, 120 wouldn't be too much of a strain if I really wanted to do it. I'm thinking I'll see 150 again within the next six months, God willing. Biceps are not and have never been that strong for me, (one time I curled 30s when I had a bad case of PMS and picked them up by accident - now I usually curl 15s or 20s) but I make up for it in tricep torque.

A Danger To Myself And Others
10-25-05 09:46 PM - Post#127826

While in self-imposed exile at home today I did:

- Jump rope, 3 sets of 30-35 revolutions even though I feel bloated and lethargic
- DB Rows, 3 sets of 10 at 30lbs.
- Three sets of five chins
- Twisties
- Hammer curls, 3 sets of ten @ 15 lbs

A record producer I once worked for told me I think like a man.

I think that's why PMS is so baffling to me. I felt it come on this morning, and it was like, "Hmmmm...something is definitely rotten in Denmark."

How can I describe it to a man?

It's morning. During the night masked terrorists hooked you up to an IV and dosed you with six large cups of black 7-11 coffee laced with 18 packets of sugar before you even got out of bed. You have no memory of this incredibly damaging incident. When you get up and make your own cup of coffee, the good kind with half and half, it is apparent from the way you are feeling that things are not right. Then, every hour until noon, you magically get the same dose of 7-11 coffee splashed into your veins until you are so maxed out on caffeine, the pictures are moving on the walls. Did I mention you also have jetlag? Further, a growing suspicion in your brain with the debate skills of Clarence Darrow is preying on your weakened state and has you throughly convinced that everything is not right. It's assuredly part of a larger conspiracy that goes back to your childhood and involves your parents, who you now view as co-conspirators. Only the cat soothes you with warm, knowing eyes - he's the only one who's on your side. He knows. He's been there from the beginning.

As soon as you get in your car to start the day, it's screamingly apparent that everyone on the road is part of this larger conspiracy, which now most likely includes members of government, the tall girl in junior high who verbally abused you, and the dog you once had that ate those beautiful irreplaceable silver earrings you got at the Thai restaurant. The burden of this knowledge is overwhelming. Your brain is foggy, and you are unable to tell anyone what is going on. You are paralyzed with grief and fear.

Worse yet, it's Tuesday. You hate Tuesday. You hear a song on the radio that reminds you of the good old days, back before you ever knew there was a conspiracy. The feeling floods over you like a death, and you are moved to tears. However, you cannot cry, because the other drivers are on to you. They now know you know. Time to buck up and keep a stalwart front going. If you can get your errands done and steal back home, you know there is a safe haven waiting for you in the closet. There you can sit in solace and smell the lavendar potpourri thingy you got at the farmer's market last year.

This is PMS.

Tomorrow you will wake up and feel perfectly normal. You will not remember Tuesday, and you will wonder why everyone darts away from you in mortal fear. However, your vaguely remember realizing yesterday that everyone was insane except the cat.
