So I just started doing Yoga to increase flexibility. Is there anyone out there who combines body building with Yoga? I was wondering what people's experiences have been with strength gain/loss while employing a Yoga routine with weight training. Just curious.

I swear by my weekly yoga class. For me yoga is more for stress relief and getting my body back in balance. I don't lift heavy the day before yoga or I don't have the strength I need for class. The day before is usually a cardio day for me. It hasn't hurt my strength, if anything it has helped.
What kind of yoga are you doing? Hope you are enjoying it.

I do something similar to Yoga that is from Chinese martial arts. The Chi-Gong exercises are very similar as they seem to come from the same Indian sources.

May I suggest to do this kind of stuff AFTER heavy lifting? The relaxed state your body enters will not allow you to lift too well, if done pre-workout. If you want scientific info, I can provide it, but that's the gist of it.

You shouldn't have a strength loss... by adding yoga to your training, you should get more flexibility, more blood to the muscles, and a deeper sensitivity to your body: minute sensitivies.

There are people who add weight to yoga poses, but I'm not thinking that's good for either one, unless the yoga poses are just "simulated" (ie: they look like yoga) and the weights are very light.

I'd recommending switching off yoga/training.

Sam is right - it's better to lift BEFORE yoga!! - the style of yoga that I do (Bikram) has limited classes at hours that work better for me to do it before lifting - not at all optimal, but I've been *making* it work (just not on leg days!!) -

I keep odd hours because of my job and am juggling lifting, cardio and yoga with sleeping, working and eating - living the BBing lifestyle as best as I can and always learning and adjusting.

I do Bikram ("hot") yoga at least 3 times per week - it's a wonderful adjunct to lifting and I've noticed strength and flexibility gains and changes in the way my body looks (firmer glutes and legs and midsection, especially) - whatever style you do, I'm certain it will serve to enhance your lifting (I like to think it cuts recovery time by "washing" the muscles with blood)

Welcome to IOL, Big Tony - let us know how it goes - happy lifting and stretching!

Yes, I do think the recovery is much faster with these kinds of Yoga exercises. I do my meditation mainly to increase energy circulation for recovery. IT keeps me from getting too banged up rolling on the mat. I also heard that it helps breaking power, but that remains to be seen when I have to break a brick or two for my Shodan (probably 2 years away).

I find that IRON tops everything. I am an Indian and here they say that lifting weights doesn't have comaptibility with yoga and vice versa. One of my gurus Ironman Nilmoni Das who was a veteran coach of Bodybuilding as well as an equally efficient yoga instructor directed to do yoga in a DIFFERENT session from weights. If however someone was timebound then he could do it AFTER the weight session.
BTW Sam, how long have you been training for the Shodan? My son is 15 and has acquired his Shodan in Shorinryu a couple of years back. He was initially in the GojuRyu where he acquired an ekyu (brown Ist, just a belt below the Shodan);but he was abstained from doing breaking work as they said that it could harm the joints/bone at the tender age.
Any particular yoga exercise to aid the breaking?

I've been doing yoga for about 7 years now. I'm not as regular with it as I am with lifting but I've done it enough to be able to do it on my own without a class or video. I do power yoga (asthana?) www.poweryoga.com and it's bad ass! The first couple weeks I couldn't make it through the entire 45 min session without stopping.

The benefits of yoga are certainly there as it pertains to mental health, relaxation, strength & flexibilty; I think the real benefit when it comes to lifting is the active recovery (as other have mentioned) and joint mobility. I've been troubled by an aching back for the last 6 months. I narrowed it down to either a trigger point or a strained iliopsoas, and just this week I corrected the problem while doing yoga. I stretched the muscle, felt it tighten, pulled a little harder, heard a crackling noise and felt it release. My back hasn't hurt since.

To clarify - my yoga sessions are separate from my weight training - but sometimes only by as little as an hour. Again, not optimal, I know. They are distinct, albeit contiguous, practices.

Royalbengal - I'm going to look up Nilmoni Das - sounds like an exceptional man.

Very cool. And a little scary. Glad it was the right kind of tighten/crack combination!

I do yoga on leg days in the afternoon. Sometimes I get a huge endorphin rush that lasts hours and it's unnerving a bit, but the only real problem I have is time. I have to make time for one more workout.

Royaltigerman,

Your son sounds impressive. Shorin and Goju are such close cousins in art form. I've been training for about 2 years. Prior to that, I've trained another style for 3 years and have worked up to a brown belt. I also train Escrima and have some level of competence in it. In Jiujitsu, I think I can get my Shodan in about 2 years. In Kenpo, maybe a little longer. The thing is, I'm raised in a family of martial artists where all my uncles and my dad are all highly proficient martial artists. So I get a little more concepts from my upbrining, but my dad fails to teach me anything.

The stuff I do is not officially yoga, but it certainly has some yoga roots as we Chinese have gotten alot from you guys over there. Teh reason I even find out that my exercise resembles yoga is because i showed it to a friend who does it and she told me that this is just like the stuff she does.

The breaking is required in our school. My son who is ready to acquire his brown has to break boards since his yellow belt test, even though he's only 8. I guess I'm not sure if it's wise, but if you want to wear the rank, you've got to show the power. it's a bit old school.

The stuff I do originates from Shaolin and Tai Chi. It's basically to direct the ki-flow (as the Japanese calls it) to the part of the body that needs it to combat. It's hard to explain. What I do is to get into a meditative position of having my hands completely locked behind my back in a prayer hand, and then kneel there with my heels touching my behind for about 1/2 hour motionless. Breath in deep, and breath out deeper. Keep your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Empty your mind. Keep the breathe voiceless and quiet. That's the one form I do daily without fail. another thing I do is simply to get into a deep horsestance with my hands in front of me as if holding a ball. I do this for about 1/2 hour each day. On alternate days, I do it for one hour. If done properly, your legs ought not get exhausted as your ki-flow will keep them energized. But you have to get over the initial pain and overcome even cramps. YOu may get to a point where you feel like you are passing out. You have to overcome that. If done properly, you'd be sweating within 20 mins, even in the winter months. I've seen guys who've mastered this aspect having steam literally rising out of the top of their heads as soon as they get into this or any other meditative stance. The guy who teaches me Tai Chi tells me that this would allow the breaking without damaging skin and bones but your ki-flow must be there already. If not, you'd be screwed. I'm not saying I can't break a brick at this point, but i want to be sure.

This is how you can tell the ki-flow is there. You will feel a bubbling sensation of a kind of a ball in your belly button. I know it's weird, trust me. You will also feel the ki-flow going from your heels to your head and the arms. Those who master this do not have to consciously call it up by a stance. Any combat situation will automatically allow this ki-flow.

Your son probably has done the Sanshin kata in Goju. I've done that kata as well when I did my previous art. IT also develops power but is a much more external development. This stuff I"m talking about is internal. I've seen Tai Chi master stomp an imprint on the ground before. I know how powerful this can be. So I will try my best to discipline myself in acquiring this power before it's my time to break.

I hope this makes some sense, with my long-winded droning. May your ki be strong and your squat be low.

Thanks Sam for all the import. I have noted and will tell my son. Yes, I am aware of the Sanshin kata in Goju which he has done. The horse stance; what do you call it? The Shiko daichi?
Well, let us get back to BB, otherwise the friends here may think that we have started a Karate/martial art forum. Thanks again.
