The one hour training session I won is coming up this Thursday afternoon, anyone got any questions let me know,

spent last weekend watching her meets in Sydney 2009 2010 and Melbourne 2009.

Beatrice Faumawina Steph BT, Beck Breisch (who is having break out year) Thurmonmd and one of the top Chinese girls were there also, and the thing I noticed was how the two slowest girls in the back were SBT and Dani, Dani I think is slower.

Should be fun..

Please tell Becky "hello" from the whole John Family and make sure she knows that Lindsay won the State Championship. We had this great photo of Becky trying to get a comb out of Lindsay's hair (I could have killed her!). I have had some great times with Becky.

Be sure to tell Dani that I have been a fan a long time and I would love anything she can share with us. Anything. Her left leg work is excellent and, now I'm gushing, I am just a huge fan of her finish.

@#$$%^&@##$% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

In other words it got moved again.....

Spent 1 hour with Denis Knowles and Kirsty another of his girl's (50m at the moment)and my understanding of his model is a lot better. Had lots of questions but it now seems so simple...maybe that will change when I try to teach my next kid..

there is an incredible storey on Denis and another one of his pupils, that is in the amazing but true catergory, but will leave for another day..

on a different note saw Dani's gym, will try and get photos of it for next week..

Think you (and many here would love it), but know a lot of kids who would walk out ...

now Thursday.....if I hang round much more I become a fixture in the entourage..hmmmm...had worse ideas..

Training with Dani Samuels and Denis this Thursday
07-29-10 12:33 AM - Post#637311

rained alllllllllllll day yesterday,

was fine this morning and the rain has now moved in (2.30 throws at 4.00),

so this was close...she is on a rest week, so she is cancelling out today completely (hey a rest week and an athlete ...rests, hmmm could catch on....nahhhhh)

and I will try and stay dry in a miserable Sydney winter (like a beutiful summers day to someone from Boston - spent 3 days building an arc there in MarcH)

so next week........

I think getting my degree was easier...

and Dan I can sum up Tuesdays coaching with Denis, as I now know less about the event than Monday, Denis has managed to get rid of a lot of misinformation,

small bits and pieces I had mentally acquired over many years, and pointed me down the path of enlightment..... "it is a rotary event"

and know some don't agree, but none of them are currently available to coach me ..

Well in fading light on a cold and windy evening on a field doing its best to resemble a swamp I finally got in my session.

after a warmup much longer than I expected (If I had done her warmup, I would probably have hopped in the car and gone home.)

Summary is
they use Wolfgang Schmidt as "the model", he is rotary, not linear, so if you are a John Powell devotee, this may be more confusing than helpful

slow out of the back.
Right foot does not move during the wind up
the right foot lifts, not turns into throw
weight is 60/40 on left to right
the weight on the left foot should be more on the inside
you do not run into the centre (they do no Seth Efrikans)but your weight is moving to the centre after you have turned in, and you speed is coming from the right leg kicking around.
Right leg is kicked around, driving with the inside of the leg, with the foot dorsi flexed.
Left foot it pointing more at the left sector line rather then the centre.

the right knee should feel like it was in a case of ice.
I asked about what they did to get the ultra agressive right foot position she archieves in the centre, and they said it just happened, and went on to explain more about the back of the circle (getting close to over load so if there was something else on that I missed it).

Dani mentioned she felt she was on the outside of her right foot when it lands.

They bought out Mac Wilkins in 2007 (Denis's son Hayden appears on a video Mac showed at the coaches conference) for a week.

Fast forward 2 1/2 years. the Germans sent out two of their best girls this year to train with Denis & Dani and throw in the Sydney international meet.

Got video of her from around most angles, will keep it for posterity.

as they said in Bill & Ted....Dani..."you're history"

It sounds like Ralph Maughan coaching L. Jay Silvester and Glenn Passey in 1962! Excellent review...nice work.

Any gems?

She is gluten intolerant...anything else?

Training?

What drills?

Anything?

Training with Dani Samuels and Denis this Thursday
08-04-10 12:35 AM - Post#638496

Don't you sleep ????

Did Ralph Maughan coach LJ ????

Commonwealth games are in mid October, so she is around 10 weeks out.

last night (and last week from what I can gather) it is just long warmup, one lap jog then lots of mobilty moves, lots and lots'. waist hips ankles hammies legs, and it is mobilty not stretching, there is a load there (as I said, a nice warm up, then a shower and off to bed for me)

Then a few standers, then around 25-30 full throws, done in sets of around 5-6 where she and Christy would alternate.

When she had finished and we made our way out onto the marsh (playfull exageration - what do you do when you have filled in a garbage dump and it is not suitable for housing (unstable and TOXIC) ....you make it an athletics field so lots of little kiddies play there)

well when she threw her last batch we went out and picked them up and all but one had skidded off to an area around 6 feet x 6 feet.

no drills, no tricks nothing special, but constant tinkering of technique. Looking for a straighter left leg on block (Christy is better at that).

Now in November it may be different, as I am becoming their version of a serial pest (they are very polite and I try to be in the background)I will see what I can pick up.

Also hopefully next week we do weights.

Actually the biggest thing I picked up is the technique, it is constant discussion between Dani & Denis, the other is how low key this all was. Only hint of there being any fire at all ,was when I asked her about her peak, World (Diamond League) finals or the Comm Games. The tone changed, the look changed, and she said "a medal at the Comm, each year it is the biggest championship of that year, nothing else matters."

focus...no ADD there..

I actuall asked Dani to do a tap round drill for me, and they said...hmmmm we don't do that, but she gave me what she would do if she did (think it was a 3 point tap round)

can't see any gems there apart form the ruthless pursuit of the chosen technical model.

best thrower in the world is Barios this year (probably last three) and she is that strong her arm flexes during delivery (involuntary bending).

So will not tell someone that strength and power is not important, think you just have to make your choices which way to go, and try your best to make them as good as anyone can..

now get some sleep..
