Dan and I have talked a great deal about lifting and some of its advanages.

Dan talks about building "armor" for football players and the goofy martial arts stuff. Where by increasing muscle size and density you end up protecting yourself from heavy hits.

Soooooo

Last Saturday, during a hammer comp, the hammer hit a hard spot on handing and shot off at an angle. I was out measuring and took a dirct shot to the left quad. Without going on from there cuz seems people freak at every boo-boo, I actually was able to continue throwing within minutes. Smarted pretty good. Sore for a few days, but otherwise I'm fine.

I think most of you know I love TBDLs and farmer's walks. Got some good dense quads. I think it would have broken my leg otherwise.

Just a thought. Building that armor does have a place in competition.

All I know, is I thank my training partner for his workouts :D

because when I hit a tree doing 65mph, I've had workouts that left me sorer!

So I guess he built up my body armor too eh?

Is this how Dan explains the discus to the head?

Gary great storey, did anyone scream "heads up" or similar as it was tracking your way ???

Back in 2000 I was hit by a basball bat several times during a McDonalds robbery (I IDed the guy and he did 5 yrs ..he was under 18).

Although the arm turned purple from below elbow to past the shoulder and I had my first 17 1/2" arm, and the muscle split along the bone, the cops and doctors kept saying that form the blow as described by witnesses it should have been broken.

and after the robbery I went back to work that afternoon and then went home and got X-rays that night.

I too have been hit by an implement. A boys high school discus that had gone around 120 feet before it impacted with my back. It hit the left erector muscle next to my spine. The discus bounced off. It felt like getting whacked with a baseball bat, but didn't hurt. I figured as soon as I took my first step it would start hurting (I was still standing). So to get it over with I decided to go ahead and take that step and get on with the pain. Problem was, my nervous system was shocked into shutting down and I couldn't move anything. "Great" I thought to myself "I'm paralyzed standing up, I won't even get to use a wheelchair". After a minute, my fingers started wiggling, then my wrists, elbows, everything started coming back on line from the outer extremeties in. I finished the practice (I was coaching at the time) and went back to my dorm. I didn't even bruise as far as I know. After that the high school kids thought I was indestructible.

I read where Sergio Oliva got shot more than once in the stomach, and lived...
Had to have been his super abs, I would think???

Hmmmmm ...time to drag through my memory.

My all time favourite storey on survival is Mike Cross. Mike is a little known powerlifter in the 56kg class, from the early 70's. A small guy, who most people would not think was very strong. Mike had about a 330 squat and 230 bench, but had a massive 550DL pulled round back pretty straight legged. He was WR holder before Lamar Gant and actually beat Gant in his first nationals.

Well several years before all that happened, he was in a car accident. I have heard that every bone in his face was broken. He was injured that badly they took him straight to the morgue, where an observant staff member told them to get him to the hospital as he was still alive.

Sergio's wounds during his domestic dispute were in his CHEST, not abdomen. His massive pectorals are probably what saved him. With his small waist and tight abdominals...5 wounds like that to his abdomen would have been very, very serious...if not fatal.

Sergio and his thoughts can be read in his book "The Myth"...It differs from the "wiki" article...
Bottom line I have to give his supreme body shape (body armor) the edge for making it alive through those encounters... Plus no real vitals were hit...

I think total, in his life he was shot 5 times, not all at once...
Arm, chest and stomach...

I met a guy yesterday in the Gym (weight lifter) has thick powerful muscles...
He mentioned reason for Sergios power and strength, is he was a "lifter" prior to "body builder" and still followed that routine, much of his life also...

Genetics are nice also...LOL

It also helps if you don't get shot in a 'bad' area.

Muscle and strong bones certain can help with creating a body shield. But weapons and knowing where to target somebody tend to counter this. No matter how much muscle you have, a strong hit to the throat or groin will take you down, as well as to the side or back of the neck, or solar plexus, kidneys, or liver or the eyes. Stomping on the knee when the person is down will do its job pretty easily.

The armor helps when somebody misses (or has bad targeting skills). The armor will help in cases as Gary said, or just for general life.

Sometimes the best explanation is just 'luck'.

Saw the legendary Emile Heskey playing for New Castle Jet (Australian Soccer League team) today.

I have seen quite a few players got "bounced" away by him when they try to get his ball. Muscles armour helps.

Perhaps a good example of someone who has great strength relative to others in the sport he plays but perhaps less than players from other football codes? But then you only need to be strong enough.

Gary, this is an outstanding thread. I've not done any armor building thinking that throwing isn't an impact sport, "so, what's the point?"...now I'm rethinking this.

Seriously, thanks for this insight. I can't imaging what would happen if a caber fell over onto my shoulder...
Thanks,
