Hi! Just wondering how the old timers managed to combine bodybuilding with olympic lifting? I read somewhere that body, power and oly lifters used to train together. I would like to do so and would really appreciate any help as i train alone in Ireland.

The short list:

Tommy Kono: Mr. Universe
Bill March: Mr. Univers
John Grimek: Mr. America

So, perhaps three of the USA's all-time best O lifters...

Just saying.

Read Kono's book, I believe he goes into some detail regarding his off season training.
Also, I remember reading somewhere that Joe Mills liked his new lifters to work on building some hypertrophy for 6 months before moving into the OLY lifts.

Excellent. Put it another way, what did their routines look like? ie did they mix the lifts into their workouts?Or did they do bodybuilding and lifts in seperate workouts and/or phases? Guess im really asking how i could put such a routine together!

Didn't you have an experience with Robby Robinson about Olympic Lifting?

Berry trained John Grimek
He wrote a few books on training principles from his era which are still in use today.

Robbie and Arnold (I know for sure Arnold) were O lifters. Zane too?

I have always thought that O lifting would be good for BB. There is just something about having the foundation to build on. I work with kids heavily influenced by BB and they love to take their shirts off, cut off the sleeves et al...then strut around with their 135 pound frames.

There was a kid (years ago) named Sammy Willis in the York Mags. He did Olympic, Power, and 5X5 and competed in bodybuilding.
Anybody have those old Strength and Health Mags?
Think of Phil Grippaldi too.

I remember Sammie...saw him compete a few times. Short dude with a great midsection. Quiet and kind of shy. Phil Grippaldi was one of the first men to tape 20 inches on the upper arm. This actually worked against him in the clean, he had difficulty racking the weight. He also wanted to pull too much with his arms.

Regarding your interest in bodybuilding, do you want to compete, or just look pretty?

If you don't want to compete, practice the o-lifts, do some strict pressing, do some conditioning, and eat right.

I don't see anything wrong with doing quite a few sets of O lifts at the beginning of 1-3 of your workouts per week. The tradeoff is that you just won't be able to get massively stronger at the power lifts and the o lifts at the same time, which - speaking of bench and dead lift - could be a detriment as most people feel the PL are better overall mass builders.

I don't see anything wrong with snatches and cleans and OHPs at the beginning of every workout, rack jerks, or whatever...maybe do your fav squat or bench at the beginning of one of your workouts...then just throw in tons of chins and hit whatever needs bringing up visually for the rest of the workout.

Experiment. I expect that you will stagnate with the bodybuilding if you don't put things like bench variations, dips and chins at the beginning of the workout sooner or later, but you may be able to maintain your O lifts.

There's a lot to suggest that doing plenty of sets of O lifts is great for your hormonal response, and that's good for BBing. Just don't expect to get an extremely balanced, bodybuilder-like physique if you don't pay your dues in bench, dips, rows, chins, and DLs (plus other stuff, lateral raises and curls are a must for a BBer sooner or later).
