A photo of Herman H.E Mann, 1930s strongman, noted for lifting full grown bulls. Milos move over.

One hell of a load of bull. If this guy is still alive I wonder if he can walk with a straight back.

personally, i've never met a bull that would allow himself to be lifted!! i've herded them, wrangled them, fenced them, pushed them off my foot, and run from them. wouldn't want to try to lift one!!

i guess if you start with him as a calf, maybe he gets used to it.

I don't know what to think about this photo.

The classic Milo myth was attempted by numerous individuals in modern times with nearly the same result each time. The experiment had to be terminated after 28-31 days, at which time the animal had grown too large to lift and carry.

Milo was supposed to have lifted a calf each day and walked a stadia with it. He did this until the animal was fully grown and a mature bull.

Googling Milo of Crotona, I found numerous accounts of his strength, versions of the calf lifting story and sculptures and drawings. Here is an account that most squares up with what I have read:

Milo of Crotona was not only an Olympic champion wrestler but a celebrated strong man. According
to Pausinas, he carried a four-year-old bull on his shoulders around the stadium at Olympia before
killing it with a single blow of his fist to its head. At the end of his life, Milo's fate was horrible.
According to Strabo, when Milo was an old man, he was walking alone in a forest and came upon a
tree that had been partially split and abandoned by woodcutters. In the pride of his strength, he
2
attempted to pull the tree apart with his bare hands, which were caught when a wedge fell from the
partially split trunk and the two halves of the tree sprang back together--hence Catherine's allusion.
Unable either to free himself or to defend himself, Milo was attacked and torn apart by wolves.(4)

This was in a critique of Wuthering Heights.

As to the photo, it just doesn't look "right."

Willie, i must agree i'm not completely sold on the legitimacy of that photo. I'd like to know for a fact that it is genuine, because that would be one tremendous feat.

the photo was obtained from Mann's nephew and is from Mann's personal scrapbook. I found it on this website: http://wwwmusclestrength.blogspot.com/

It sounds legitimate

I've got an idea that the bulls in Milo's time weren't a match in size to todays bulls which are products of years of breeding and superior nutrition also the breed itself would have a lot to do with the size.Today,if you have to pick it up go for a Jersey bull not a Brahman bull. Also on Milo's death, him trying to split a tree with his hands when he should have used an ax or whatever tools they had at the time puts me in mind of a conversation between two yogis, one yogi said "After 20 years of intense meditation I can now walk accross the lake"the other yogi said"I prefer to give the boy with the boat 2 dollars to row me accross".
How often has bad management been mistaken for destiny?

Gotta give them credit for lifting what was available at the time though! :)

Isn't there a saying: Tis better to lift a cow than never to lift at all... Er, something like that I guess
It's time to move on,time to get going,
What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing,
But under my feet baby, grass is growing,
It's time to move on, it's time to get going...

....the photo is just one frame in an action sequence. It appears that the bull spotted Mann walking in the bull's territory and reacted with a flying cross body check from behind. You can see the shock on Mann's face as he realizes that the bull has his arms pinned agains his body and is prepping Mann for the take-down and 2 points.

I call foul on both pics. I've butchered many cattle and calves, mostly for zoo animal consumption, and the animal across his shoulders is a lil'un. I'd be surprised if it weighed as much as 300 lbs.

Elephants are not among the animals I can easily estimate weights on from personal experience, but that's not 800 lbs of animal in that pic either. It's a very young animal in relatively poor body condition. A zookeeper accustomed to working with those species could give you a pretty accurate weight, but I'm going to guess in the ballpark of 400 lbs.

You are right about both animals. I regularly ride horses and know more or less what 800 lbs and then some looks like on the hoof.

I once ran an "encierro" in Spain although I should point out I never attended any bull fight. My girlfriend at the time invited me but I wouldn't go on principle.
The encierro or bull run was a different matter as the bulls simply run along the streets and chase people. So, I gave it a go. I recall watching the first run and saw the bulls and figured they weren't so large and I could do it. But, unknown to me, the next day they set the big bulls loose when I was running. I recall looking behind to see these monstrous, horned beasts who could outrun us all or even kill. It's a dangerous activity.
I was the first runner to do the event in bedroom slippers. The Spanish runners complained to the police on standby I could be a danger to others in my slippers but that is indeed how I ran.

There is definitely more bull in this story than what's draped on his shoulders. Or more like bull by-product.

This was the original idea for those bull-riding machines in the Texas taverns. Too many men threw the live bulls and the resultant injuries caused the bulls to be put down. Cattlemen cried, so the roles were reversed: bull on bottom, person on top. The odor became too offensive in the closed confines, so the switch was made to mechanical bulls.
The mechanical bulls started out with one young, lighter, person for training, and that same person would ride the bull every day until the bull was strong enough to handle the heaviest cowpoke.
Not sure if the above is accurate, but I'm sure it is on Wikipedia somewhere...

Yes, I do...sorry to say but he was not one of my favorite people...he had a lot of issues but that is a totally different story. I cannot imagine my brother giving that pic to anyone!!!! We were the only neice and nephew he had....I have a pic somewhere that is a little different..on which he wrote the amount of lbs. I have searched for it but haven't found it yet. When I do I will post it. I think this is the first time I have ever admitted being related to him. I just felt I needed to clear things up. He went around to many fairs and carnivals showing off his strength. I remember lying to reporters about being related to him and getting uncovered when he died...LOL sorry if this sounds cold but I have my reasons/
Thanks again.
