This lady was the first one there. Here is her background and a pic:

"Born 1953 Los Angeles, California, USA
Lisa Lyon competed only once in her brief bodybuilding career, but what she lacked in competitive longevity, she more than made up for in helping the women’s side of the sport gain initial media attention.
Lyon studied art at the University of California at Los Angeles, and became accomplished in kendo, the Japanese art of fencing. It was her need of added upper-body strength for kendo that brought her to weight training and, eventually, bodybuilding.
After winning the first IFBB Women’s World Pro Bodybuilding Championships in Los Angeles on June 16, 1979, Lyon immediately became a one-woman media-relations activist on behalf of the sport. She appeared in all the bodybuilding publications of the time and was featured in many magazines outside the world of fitness and muscle.
She made the rounds on the television talk shows and wrote a book on weight training for women titled Lisa Lyon’s Body Magic, which was published in 1981."

She was assisted by Douglas Kent Hall who worked with Arnold on his first book.
I notice female bodybuilding isn't mentioned so often yet there are many women who train and post.
I figured Lisa also depicts an era that may have been lost. Personally I thought she was good and here I enclose another pic.

I guess it's all according to taste. Lisa, Pudge, and Rachel all look good to me; Joanna is a little over the line for my taste. But, then again, I always liked Bev Francis and thought that she was mistreated in some of the contests she was in, and many would say she really started women bodybuilders in the direction of Joanna.

I also have a photo book of her by Maplethorpe.....during my photography phase.

Bev was definitely short-changed in her Ms. Olympia contests with Cory Everson. In one of them they had a mock arm wrestle/test of strength on stage. Bev was a champion powerlifter and shot putter. In any real test of strength she would have easily and decisively beaten Cory. However, Cory was a lot cuter and the rest is history.

I sent my friend in North Carolina a pic of Lisa Lyon - the same one I posted here. I've been trying to get her to (1) join this site and (2) start weight training.
I was hoping there would be threads also geared towards female bombers which I think would be terrific.
Of course, you can't push your interests on other people but at any rate she wrote this to me in her letter:

"I would love to look like that. How old is she in the pic? She's not overly developed and she looks very well toned which is what I want."

And on Mapplethorpe, she writes:

"Through taking the art class, I believe he was mentioned in the book.Very well known artist. There were some pics in the book also."

This is also O.K. Nice shape and not too much muscularity. She looks feminine and like a bodybuilder.

Looks like a muscular cross dresser to me. I like the fitness competitors a lot more than the bodybuilders. Look at this lady from Olympia this year and tell me what's feminine!

Just my opinion....and no disrespect intended, she obviously worked her you know what off for that body!

I agree but I must choose my words carefully. I think womens' bodybuilding needs to set the standard for the feminine physique which means women should have definition, symetry, proportion and strength.
However, large muscles on a woman for me, it's not what I like to see.
Having said that, the same can apply to us guys maybe going overboard and having too much muscle as well.
All in all, I think modern bodybuilding has pushed competitors into developing bigger, more freakish muscles and the classic physiques of former times (the Zanes, the Nubrets and the Lisa Lyons) have been neglected somewhat.
of course, I know some guys like to see women with 17 inch biceps and some ladies also want to attain that goal.

I could get away with a lat spread or a side tricep and it wouldn't be so bad. But this kind of pose would cause a few sniggers if I tried it. For this you need abs and Zane knew he had a lot of people beat with this kind of shot.

I think Lisa Lyon looked good. A little bit too muscular for my personal taste (ripped up back), but I mean that was cut down for competition.

Most of the other women.. I mean if that's what you're into, fine, I don't judge on that kind of thing, but I am not attracted to that at all. Toning up the arms, legs and core, great. Some back work? I'm fine with that, I love fit women. But bulging muscles (especially those arms) don't do it for me. They can do what they want though and I respect them. Just don't be offended by honest opinions.

Some women don't like guys with bulging muscles either. Even proportionate like Frank Zane.
