"Jimmy Caruso stood before his magical camera with Joe Weider by his side. I stood before them on a pure white backdrop amid tripods, lights, shades and wires. The rest of the building was dirty black, a ten-story warehouse in lower Manhattan, the day after the '66 Mr. Universe contest. This is what ya get for winning. Joe and Jimmy were a masterful team.

There were a dozen or more Mr. America and Mr. Universe contest winners packed behind the lights and camera waiting to be photographed. Somewhere in the heart of Manhattan on the fifth floor of a soon-to-be condemned clothing factory, we all sweated out a late hot summer afternoon.

The night before the excitement was unbridled and the audience participation was intense, inspiring and personal. None of us will ever forget the overwhelming chills as the crowd roared and thundered their approval."
