Training in the Golden Era

In all of your training years, were you ever tempted to try another style of training ? Second question– you said in Brother Iron that Zane was a great workout partner for you.  Now I can see Arnold and you being great training partners because of  both of you being around the same size, but how did you and Zane connect since you had such a size and strength advantage over him? Those sure were the good old days — Venice and Muscle Beach, Gold’s Gym and the crew.

Thanks for your enthusiastic support of the glory days of our sport. Truth is, I can’t comfortably look at what is going on today in the bodybuilding world. It’s foreign to me, a mutilation. Whatever. There are you and me and a band of diehard ironheads and that stack of steel before us. We’re good.

Long ago Frank and I met in the early AM at Gold’s to get the iron clanking. Once we were warmed up and ready to go, he went his way and I went mine. In the evening workouts we — Arnold, Franco, Katz, Zabo — all crossed paths, energy and spirits high. Mostly I trained on my own amid the small, intense crowd. Pace, focus, exercise choices and moods are individual and hard to compromise. Still, we pushed and pulled and strained in the same direction at once.

I learned early on to train by my heart and my head, not by others… give me volume and saturation and room to play hard.

Train hard, eat right, rejoice… God loves us… The Bomb
