How much training as we age?
I just finished reading Iron On My Mind on my Kindle, very interesting selection of columns. Having been introduced to weight training by my dad in the mid 1950s, the columns bring back memories of working out at the Eastern District YMCA in Williamsburg, Brooklyn through part of high school & college and working at Flushing YMCA in Queens with small smelly, wight rooms with the wrench collars. You write about three-day-a-week workouts, but I thought I read a recent column with two days off between workouts. I’m 68. As we are approaching 70, do you recommend two days off between workouts or should this be based on how we feel ?
The Ys and their iron-stuffed closets next to the boiler room worked. We are proud post-graduates.
That’s a nice arrangement… we modify according to circumstances. Common sense is one of our best attributes. A moderate three-day-a-week schedule is pretty common and substantial for a regimented B-68.
So many variables in training – Bill Pearl, 80, trains daily. With my limitations and my style of training, twice a week is all I can handle…
Walking is a wonderful exercise between workouts — stairs, hills, weighted backpack.
We never quit… Godspeed… Dave
