These aging legs
It’s purely my opinion, but the first thing to go on a man is his legs and if a man does not keep up his leg strength, everything else starts to decline. Do you agree? What are the types of exercises I can do now that I am mid 63 when I am unable to perform the regular squat?
General advice for leg health after years of fun and frolic, wear and tear…
Knees and hips by now have had their share of impact and overload. Our aim today should be to keep them healthy and well stimulated. We’re all different: wear and tear, rest and repair, and response to different actions and movements.
Walking is great exercise, especially when hills and stairs are included in the routine. You might consider walking with a weighted backpack periodically. It’s important as far as it is possible to walk well, upright and in a balanced stride to prevent improper muscle recruitment.
How about freehand squats, warming up, finding a decent depth, holding onto a rack with one hand and going for thoughtful, well-felt reps… perhaps at various speeds (slow and not-so-slow). In the gym ,sensible leg extensions and leg curls and lightweight partial-rep leg presses (or partial squats?) might suit you well (3 set x 15, 12, 10 rep range). Knee wraps have their place in leg training.
Try them, mix and match, avoid excess and injury, and discover…
What the heck… we press on… Godspeed… D
