Volume Training

I recently turned 30 years old and have been trying to elevate the intensity of my workouts (drop sets, supersets and what I call Ten Minutes of Hell, doing one exercise for ten minutes with little to no rest). I’m afraid I won’t keep gaining size and strength. What would you recommend to increase strength without all the volume?

Be courageous and daring. Train hard, but don’t beat yourself to death. Pause and think, and trust yourself. You’ll make mistakes and learn from them, as the wise man said.

I like training each body part twice a week, knowing there is a lot of  muscle overlap as I plod on. I like two or three exercises per muscle group, 4 to 5 sets of each and typically a 12, 10, 8, 6 rep scheme. Sometimes 20 reps are sought on certain movements (ex. triceps pulley pushdowns) and doubles and singles on certain movements once every two weeks (squat and deadlift). I like super sets, I like pushing and pulling combined, not pulling and pulling and pushing and pushing as some intellectualize. I like training by feeling rather than training by thinking. My mind helps, but mostly gets in the way.

Some favorite combinations: bis and tris — chest and back — shoulders and arms — legs and core…

It’s all good… Carry on… thanks for the good word… Dave
