Aging and weight loss

I am a 73-year-old male and weigh 146lbs with body fat around 17%. My question is, would it be better for me to try to gain weight and limit any fat gain or lose a bit more and try to hang on to what muscle I’ve got? I work out at home every other day with what for you would probably seem light weights but I do try to go to failure. My diet is around 1800 cals a day….30% carbs, 40% protein and 30% fat.  Over the last 2 years, I have lost around 12lbs, but my body fat as a % is about the same so I have lost some lean weight which probably isn’t good at my age.

I offer guesses and what I would do if I were you…

I would continue to train with your current bodyweight. Focus on quality of health and muscle function and workout efficiency and workout joy. Aging is a tough Instructor. Letting go is a mean assignment. We resist both by applying our inner wisdom and justice: smart workouts, right eating, good attitude; perseverance, hope, God’s might.

Sounds like you do what I do: Basic exercises, good mix and varied often. An hour of hard, yet non-threatening training does the trick. Keep workouts fresh, alive and tasty… few rules, plenty of commonsense, lots of spirit…

Your diet is also similar to my regimen. Lots of raw vegetables, some fruit, sufficient grains and portions of fish, poultry ‘n red meat daily — EFAs, Super Spectrim vitamin/mineral and aminos and Bomber Blend

Ageless Growth is highly popular with me and many IronOnline participants.

I wonder if HRT (hormone replacement therapy) would be advisable…

We press on… God’s strength… Dave
