Gaining muscle at 70

I’m 70, a 6′ 190# ex-athlete, doing a high intensity, slooow reps workout with moderate weights, working each set until the muscle just won’t move, 8-12 reps…  whole body each workout, twice a week. I’d like to build more size in my arms and shoulders. I’m willing to do any type exercises for that, and I have the time to work out a different day twice a week if that’s what you feel would bring real results.

I can’t imagine how to gain muscle size at my advanced age of 68. More training, exclusive training only frazzles my surrendering muscle. Gain weight = gain fat. Too much weight or time in the gym under the iron and I do damage to the system — joints, muscles, insertions, the pump.

We’re all different, though, and muscle gain, especially at mature ages, depends a lot on how much muscle we’re holding, how much training we’ve done in the past. I stopped trying to advance size and instead try to hang on to what I have with a thin grin and a roar.

I advise you to train in a way that pleases your heart and soul and health and well-being. Have fun, be strong, work hard and smart, eat right and don’t fret — my latest motto.

Go… Godspeed… Dave
